2K Games has secured a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to lead the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently developing the upcoming third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.
Leadership Transition Follows Poor Feedback
Brinkman steps into the role of studio head at 31st Union following the dismissal of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to the game's lackluster initial reveal last fall.
Recently, the company's top executive David Ismailer notified staff about this strategic move through an internal memo, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had revealed the necessity for a more defined vision.
The president noted that the team is now reimagining the project with a revised approach, aiming to address community desires.
Trend of Strategic Acquisitions
The news mirrors a similar step taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they recruited an industry veteran from the Diablo team to assist with the BioShock development group.
Below is the full content from Ismailer's communication:
Dear Team—
I understand you all just finished your town hall - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the recent updates. Last time I sent you all a note, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most dedicated and creative developers we have had the pleasure to partner with - and we’re looking forward for that relationship to persist.”
Through your commitment and flexibility, especially over the past twelve months, you repeatedly show that.
The player input from last fall’s the game demo was informative. It validated the promise of a action-packed game but indicated we still had work to do. It uncovered the need for a sharper vision.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve progressed. You took the input to heart and overhauled the title with a revitalized vision - one that’s poised to fulfill its promise to our players.
The belief in this project strengthens every day. To advance the incredible advancement you’ve made, I’m excited to welcome the new hire as the incoming Studio Head of the team. Following some time of talks, Ben comes aboard us on next week.
Ben’s leadership and expertise in the competitive gaming field is extensive, having devoted the recent years creating and leading some of the most well-known titles in gaming, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops, and more recently, Apex Legends.
I invite you all in receiving Ben soon. We are all looking forward to keep seeing the progress of the game in the weeks to follow.
The President
Background of the New Leader
The appointee presently holds the role of senior developer and head of production at the renowned studio for their flagship title. Brinkman previously was employed at Treyarch and Activision in multiple production roles on the Call of Duty series, and, prior to that, had stints at other industry leaders.
Title Information and Vision
Project Ethos was unveiled in October 2024 in conjunction with a early access event. At the time, the developers portrayed the title as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an innovative advancement on the category."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in real-time to match your preferred approach," the game's pitch explains. "Face the competition with new abilities, challenges, and tests that change every round. Do you safely extract with your collected items? Alternatively take a risk, risk it all, and hope your team can earn top ranking? The option is up to you."
The game has not yet received an announced debut schedule or consoles, but fans can anticipate further news as development continues.
