Australia's captain Poised for a Major Role in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has taken 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series set to start on November 21 in Perth.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of participating.

"We know that time is getting short and there are permutations at play, not only the back issue, but further aspects," he commented.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he will feature a major part. With luck it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of back injuries, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons leading to absences from three Australian summers in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the series.

The selector indicated that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the initial game as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the starting games in any case. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for another day, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
