In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of systemic graft in politics.
Details of the New Electoral Partnership
According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with a number of major political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
