Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Displacement Confirmed

The Philippines was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials reported that the massive storm triggered widespread sudden floods, storm surges, mudslides, and fierce gale-force winds, leading to the relocation of 1.4 million people across the country.

Widespread Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, emergency crews documented floodwaters climbing to rooftop levels and residences being swept away by the powerful currents.

Our team rescued fourteen people stranded atop a house surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. “A father also called in panic, saying his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We saved him along with four family members.”

By Monday, officials confirmed two fatalities: one from drowning in Catanduanes and another who died after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The intense storm was downgraded to a typhoon on Monday morning as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

Per the state weather service, its maximum winds decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The cyclone is expected to lose strength while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency stated it was still working to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to accommodate 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed at least 224 people with dozens unaccounted for before moving on toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for the missing persons were halted on Sunday over risks for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is making cyclones more intense and frequent. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Scientists report that the rate of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has risen by more than 100% over the last two decades.

Global assessments suggest that severe weather events cause an average of millions in dollars in damage for the Philippines every year.

The nation’s leader issued an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the extensive devastation caused by the prior typhoon and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
