Together Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Consider this a challenge for long-term couples who are fans of horror films: Sit down with your partner and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its online premiere on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it might appear like typical biological terror, but inside Together resides a profound meditation about our choices in loving one another.

An Introductory Film Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for over ten years. Married in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a particular energy to their characters, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The plot commences when Tim and Millie move from the metropolis to the rural area for her career. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the tropes conclude. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their country house, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim fall into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity begins influencing the duo. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying fright fest, blending elements of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and delivers them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and far away from his social circle. He fears the notion of totally forfeiting his individual identity in another person. This fear is intensified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

The couple grapple with the type of challenges that are inherent in any relationship a decade in. At their core, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, offer support, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the symbolism never feels hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have seen the movie as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Conversely, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your other half and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can undertake right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu now.
